The Anderson family makes their way from the barren lands of Britain to the exciting, unpopulated lands of British North America. As they are stationed in Fort Erie, a desolate fort that was built in the middle of nowhere, they are split into everyday activities. All seems well in Fort Erie as young Lawrence, who was born on the treacherous passage to North America settles down in the loft of their family shop, he learns to explore and have initiative to do what is right. However, all is not right. When Lawrence has turned fifteen, the legal age for conscription to the British Army, the Americans invade in the infamous War of 1812. During the battle at Chippawa Creek, John Anderson is has gone missing, while Luke is sprawled on the battlefield, with a piece of cannon ammunition stuck into his arm, and Lawrence is trapped in the middle of the field, with many Americans after him.
