In a world of prejudice and slavery, seven-year-old May witnesses the power of the written word. She, along with her enslaved nanny, Tula, find that reading is a form of freedom and harvest a love for something intangible. However, May soon learns the severity of the racist world she lives in and how something as seemingly simple as reading is a major blessing and privilege.
