Daniel Stevenson, a lackluster literature teacher, has lived his life as though he has no secrets. The monotony in his life is broken when he gets into a fist fight that he cannot win. The fight is over a young woman, Lydia Perez, who only claims to love Daniel.. She was the one who proposed marriage to him after all.
Mary Woods, is the weird Goth girl who is known to carry her toddler in a beach bag and lives in a burnt down house. When Daniel and Mary meet, it is not love at first sight but soon they realize how similar their stories are. This sparks the onset of a turbulent yet simplistic relationship in which a man is looking for a daughter, and a girl is in search for a father figure.
In the end, Daniel has to choose between facing his buried past or moving on. Yet, can anyone be too old to start again?
